Generosity as worship: a reflection on 2 Corinthians 9
What does it mean to give cheerfully? A short devotional on the theology of generosity.
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7
Paul wrote those words to a church he was asking to give sacrificially, to people far away whom they had never met. What is striking is what he does not say. He does not appeal to guilt. He does not set a quota. He appeals instead to joy, because he understands that generosity is not primarily a transaction. It is worship.
When we give, we declare something about who we believe God is. We declare that He is the owner and we are the stewards. We declare that His economy, where the one who sows generously reaps generously, is more trustworthy than our instinct to hold tightly.

Paul goes on: “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God” (2 Corinthians 9:11). The purpose of provision, in Paul's telling, is further generosity, and the end of generosity is thanksgiving to God from people we may never meet.
